Allama Mashriqi Case

Conducted the trial of Allama Mashriqi for the murder of Dr. Khan Sahib - who, before Partition, had been leader of the Red Shirts and Chief Minister of the North-West Frontier Province; and after Partition served as a central minister and, upon the creation of the Province of West Pakistan, its first Chief Minister. At the time of the murder he was leader of the defunct Republican Party.

Defended Allama Mashriqi and others before the trial court and the Sessions Judge, Lahore. Allama Mashriqi was acquitted but his co-accused, Atta Muhammad, was convicted and sentenced to death. He then appeared in the Lahore High Court challenging the conviction, but the appeal was dismissed and the conviction maintained. The case has been reported as Atta Muhammad v. The State, PLD 1960 Lahore 129.

Yousaf Renate Case - Gardezi v. Lt. Col. Muhammad Yousaf

A renowned case in which Lt. Col. Muhammad Yousaf was tried under sections 497/498 PPC by a learned Single Judge of the Lahore High Court of West Pakistan, on a complaint filed by Syed Ali Nawaz Gardezi. The complaint was originally filed before the ADM Lahore but was transferred to the High Court on the ground that Lt. Col. Yousaf, being a Commissioner of a Division, would cause the subordinate courts to feel embarrassment.

Lt. Col. Yousaf was convicted and sentenced by the Single Judge. On appeal, a Bench of three Judges of the High Court set aside the conviction and acquitted him of both charges. That order was challenged in appeal, but the Honourable Supreme Court did not interfere with the acquittal. Reported as Syed Ali Nawaz Gardezi v. Lt. Col. Muhammad Yousaf, PLD 1963 SC 51. Mr. Batalvi appeared for Syed Ali Nawaz Gardezi throughout - at trial and appellate stages.

General Yahya - Martial Law Case

Appeared for the petitioners in the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the case in which the Martial Law proclaimed by General Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan was held to be illegal and his assumption of power as President and Chief Martial Law Administrator was not recognised as valid. Reported as Asma Jilani v. Federation of Pakistan, PLD 1972 SC 139.

Qadiani's Case

Represented the Qadianis before the Justice Samdani Tribunal, constituted by the Government of the Punjab to inquire into an incident that had taken place at Rabwa Railway Station.

The Trial of Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan

Appeared as Special Public Prosecutor in the trial of the former Prime Minister relating to the murder of Nawab Ahmed Khan, father of Ahmed Raza Kasuri, MNA. The trial was conducted by a Full Bench of five Judges of the Lahore High Court in its original side, and Mr. Batalvi also represented the State in appeal and review proceedings before the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Lahore Race Club

Represented the Lahore Race Club in the Horse Betting Case dealt with by the Shariat Court.

Banning of Alcohol for Muslims Case

Represented the Murree Brewery in the Ban of Alcohol for Muslims Case dealt with by the Shariat Court.

Qisas and Diyat Ordinance Case

After the promulgation of the Qisas and Diyat Ordinance, certain difficulties arose in the interpretation of its provisions. A Full Bench was constituted by the Lahore High Court, in which Mr. Batalvi appeared for the petitioners. The judgment of the Full Bench has been reported as Muhammad Ashraf v. The State, PLD 1991 Lahore 347.

Ch. Shujaat Hussain Case

Ch. Shujaat Hussain and members of his family were implicated in a case due to political rivalry. Mr. Batalvi appeared for Ch. Shujaat Hussain and secured his bail from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Reported as 1995 SCMR 1249.

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed Case

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed was involved in a case for keeping an unlicensed Kalashnikov and was convicted by the Special Court. An appeal was filed in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench. During the pendency of the appeal, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed was shifted to Bahawalpur Jail; that order was challenged and ultimately the Supreme Court of Pakistan accepted the petition, directing that he be brought back to Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. Reported as Sh. Rasheed Ahmed v. The State, PLD 1996 SC 168.

Nomination Papers for the President of Pakistan

The nomination papers of Mr. Muhammad Rafiq Tarar for the presidential seat were rejected by Mr. Mukhtar Ahmed Junejo, the then Chief Election Commissioner. Against the rejection, Mr. Batalvi appeared for Mr. Rafiq Tarar before a Full Bench of the Lahore High Court, and the writ petition was accepted. Reported as Muhammad Rafiq Tarar v. Justice Mukhtar Ahmed Junejo, Acting Chief Election Commissioner, PLD 1998 Lahore 461.

Plane Hijacking Case

Defended Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who had been removed on account of the military intervention by General Pervez Musharraf. Reported at PLD 2002 Karachi 152.
